British classical music owes a great deal to Sir Thomas Beecham. In 1932, he founded the London Symphony Orchestra. After World War II he tried to rejoin the orchestra, but it cramped his style, so he founded another philharmonic, the Royal. Sixty years on, these are two of the best orchestras in Europe.
The Royal Philharmonic is a busy touring orchestra and continues to play all over the world. They also have a residency at the Royal Albert Hall. This is one of the most coveted positions in the classical world, with a beautiful acoustic, and a chance for the RPO to play in many of the Proms.
With a glittering history, a fantastic London home, and a place in the nation's hearts, the Royal Philharmonic is a fantastic orchestra and repay their public with a wonderful breadth and standard of performances.
