Everything the Smith Westerns record seems to be drenched in a combination of honey and sunshine which is surprising for a band who originates from Chicago. Once you have come to terms with the almost wheezy nature of the band's music, you will be pleased to know there are some cracking melodies lurking underneath.
While there may be more than one occasion where you hear a resemblance to the work of Mark Bolan, the Smith Westerns have managed to carve out a sound of their own which resembles a dirtier glam rock intertwined with traditional romantic refrains such as on 'be my girl'.
The Smith Westerns certainly have an aura around them, seemingly sounding effortlessly cool with their up tempo acoustic numbers covered in fuzzy guitars and it is a credit to their song writing skills that the tunes are still just as good when taken out of the studio.
