Speech Debelle

Speech Debelle (real name Corynne Elliot) is a smooth-sounding rapper and hip-hop artist from South London. The 26-year-old's turbulent teenaged experiences have led to lyrical themes that are reflective and philosophical as much as they are also laden with humour.

She's currently signed to the Big Dada record label and her debut LP, 'Speech Therapy', was released in 2009. Midsummer, it unexpectedly won the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize for Best British Album.

Her style is poetical; she's almost like a spoken word artist who's turned her compositions into songs. She favours live instrumentation for her beats, which are usually jazz- or reggae-inspired. Fans of smooth hip-hop (think A Tribe Called Quest and Q-Tip, De La Soul and Common) will take to her sound.

Speech Debelle on Michael Jackson in the Metro's 60 second interview: "To me, Michael Jackson's story of his life is very similar to the story of Jesus. This young guy who, from when he was very young, showed signs of being exceptional. Jesus went around preaching the gospel and touching people [!!!] and.. making lepers better. Michael Jackson's gone around the world and done that - he might not have literally touched someone and made them see but, apparently, I don't know if this is true, there were kids around him that had cancer that don't have cancer any more." In other words, she's as nutty as a fruitcake!
