Status Quo

Since they settled on the name Status Quo in 1967, this band have had over 60 top 40 hits, making them the most popular rock group in history. Whether they're any good, is something that's open to debate.

The Quo still tour pretty busily, and enjoy a loyal army of fans around the UK and USA. They also constantly release new music and in this sense they could be seen as a comparatively vital and innovative group of old rockers. However, they always play 'Rockin all Over The World' and they're pretty much known for a collection of mid-70s hits that were in themselves pastiches of better '60s rock numbers.

Any Quo gig is going to be fun. It will also be packed with balding, overweight old men but there's no denying the amazing energy retained by original members Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt.

Quo are in many senses a tribute act to their younger selves. Nothing wrong with that, it works for the Stones... but where Quo differ is that they've been paying homage to their hits for more than half of an admittedly impressive life span. Nobody gives a hoot about their new stuff. This is seemingly confirmed by the fact that 'Whatever You Want' and 'Rockin All Over the World' are the only tracks that get any airplay.

In 2008 the Quo did a completely brianless collaboration with Hamburg techno merchants Scooter (remixing 'Whatever You Want', surprise!) and began work on their first ever Christmas single. This marked the beginning of a new cycle in their life as they move from harmless good-time irrelevance into the 'downright irritating' bracket.
