Tenacious D
Tenacious D are Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The two met at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1989 before Jack Black became the Hollywood star he is today and despite initial tension, the two eventually got on and started a band.
A television show starring the two aired in 1997 and was popular enough to warrant an album being recorded. In 2001 it was released and received good reviews.
So what next? Well a film of course. The Pick of Destiny was considered a flop but gained a cult following and the accompanying album achieved success in the charts.
