The Horrors

Yes, they have the legs of anorexic spiders, the hair of Cruella de Vil and seem to have applied their eyeliner in the dark, but The Horrors also make music.

And despite the desire to deride them as art school chancers with far more style than substance, they are at least ploughing a garage-rock furrow that most bands have left well alone recently.

Sure, The Cramps, The Sonics and Screaming Lord Sutch got there first, but it's about time somebody brought psych-garage back into fashion. Now we've just got to try to squeeze into our new black jeans...

The Horrors – Who Can Say
XL Recordings

Cooler-than-thou Faris Badwan and his gang of amusingly-named stooges have traded in their Halloween noises and Victoriana posturing for a look that makes them seem less like an art-school ruse and more like a band.

Their new sound – courtesy of Portishead's Geoff Barrow – channels the shimmering relentlessness of early '90s shoegaze, but fortunately, Faris' pop sensibility stops the melodies from completely disappearing under an artfully unkempt fringe. And there's even scope for an arch voiceover. It's
actually brilliant! 4/5

Every now and again I find a bit of vintage Marcus and this is just such an occasion. Absolutely brilliant write up.
