The Maccabees

London indie quintet formed in Clapham in 2003, The Maccabees are one of the best new bands to have emerged in the post-Libertines era. With an insistent indie-punk style of music, the lyrics of frontman Orlando Weeks truly set them apart.

Singing about everything from the Green Cross Code to swimming baths, they are refreshingly unpretentious and infectiously catchy.

Add this to an electric live performance, adding an edginess to the innocence, and they are very nearly the complete package. If there is any justice in the musical world, they will be massive.

The Maccabees – Love You Better
Polydor

This opening track from their forthcoming second album epitomises everything I love about the Maccabees; it draws you in with an infectious guitar hook before building up to an emotional crescendo. Orlando's vocals are just as brooding and resonating as ever, and the lyrics just as quirky and intriguing (on the wet tiles - er, what?).

One thing's for sure - if this song is anything to go by, the album is going to be immense. 4/5

The Maccabees – Can You Give It
Polydor

I can't listen to this song without having painful flashbacks of being completely battered by over-excited pogo-ing indie kids and getting absolutely soaked with wayward-flying beer. Ah, fun times.

The video is also rather good. It offers some fascinating insights into the crazy world of cheese rolling. Definitely worth a watch. Cheese aside, it's actually a very good song. Kind of makes you want to jump up and down and throw beer everywhere. 4/5
