The Pogues

The Pogues, led by the mercurial Shane MacGowan, formed around Kings Cross in the early '80s, after a period in which Shane seemed to attend every Clash show ever caught on film.

Combing the ethos of punk with the melodies of Celtic folk, they inspired a huge cult following before mainstream success with 1987's 'Fairytale of New York' (still the best Christmas song ever recorded).

Shane was kicked out in 1991 and briefly replaced by Joe Strummer but returned a decade later. Nowadays, their Christmas tours are one of the highlights of the season.

Seeing McGowan live is an experience not to be missed; personally I'd have thought he'd have shuffled loose this mortal coil years ago, but thankfully he's still around to entertain all of us sinners. Do not miss.
