The XX

A south-London four-piece with a distinctive, if derivative sound. Echoing guitars and haunting vocal lines recall the romantic pomp of the 80s, but the songwriting is original and The XX definitely have something about them.

Maybe it's the two lead vocalists, Oliver and Romy, who co-write and sing together creating dreamy, enthralling harmonies. More likely - it's the guitarist Baria whose clearly amped finger picks recall the work of Porl Thompson for The Cure - truly exhilarating. She does some mean keyboard stuff as well.

A great band: big things, we think.

*Single of the Week* [27 April]
The XX – Crystalised
Young Turks

'Hype' and 'buzz' bring out my worst qualities and make me think of talentless drongos like The Asbos, so I fully expected to spend this week slagging The XX. However, this is a beguiling record, fantastically simple and hinting at the strengths of a great band.

Duelling acoustic guitars and a high electric line support clever lyrical back-and forth between two leads. The guitar work of this band is even better than the vocals – they're genuinely very good indeed! I'm a convert. 4.5/5

SINGLES OF THE WEEK- 3rd AUGUST

The XX – Basic Space
Young Turks

With previous song 'Crystalised' crowned single of the week back in April, The XX have a lot of Spoonfed pressure on their shoulders this week, with the release of 'Basic Space'.

Oliver and Romy, lead singers of The XX, once again fuse haunting melodies and that all-important techno beat, to create an effortless sound that makes 'Basic Space' a winner. The song is another first-class listen, and again displays the promise of an up-coming band. Phew! 4/5
