Three Trapped Tigers

3, they say, is the magic number, and certainly there are triplicate's a plenty when it comes to incendiary glitch-jazz trio Three Trapped Tigers.

Taking their moniker from a novel by Cuban writer Cabrera Infante, the London based TTT began life as a noise improv duo consisting of Tom Rogerson, fresh from New Yorks improv jazz scene, and Matt Calvert. In mid 2007 the duo increasingly turned to drummer Adam Betts to give some human inflections to their analogue noisebombs.

Rogerson is adamant in interviews that he views TTT as a live band expperience not a laptop experiment. Releasing an EP late in 2008 the band have garnered comparisons from Battles to the Lord high glitchmaster himself Richard D James. 2009 holds more EPs and more hour's clocked at the experimentation desk. They won't rush an album... but then with the journey so far you really hope they don't.

Not only do Three Trapped Tigers win the award for best animal-themed name narrowly beating Pull Tiger Tail to the title, they have also pulled off one of the best EPs I've heard in ages.

Taking the listener in all directions, each of the 5 tracks manages to sound like a cacophony of noise yet at the same time beautifully melodic. Picking up where 65 Days of Static left off, Three Trapped Tigers are certainly ones to watch out for

SINGLES REVIEW

Three Trapped Tigers – 7/1
too pure

7/1 is a spontaneous mix of Mike Oldfield-style melodies and childhood computer game synths, with some vicious percussion to throw your confused little ears off the scent of the machine gun melody.

Far from being intimidating, the barrage of musical artillery fire is perfectly executed and if you listen hard enough you'll find a slither of coherence hiding underneath the rubble of broken noise. This new double A side offers a more accessible route into electronic glitch-jazz than favourites Aphex Twin. 4.75/5

Three Trapped Tigers – EP 2
Blood and Biscuits

Like an old Nokia ring tone on the blink, in come Three Trapped Tigers with '2' from their latest EP. Whilst their previous songs have had a more defined electronica sound, this is a let down.

However, as the irritating beeping fades, the song starts to become bearable, even if the piano and gentle humming combo does resemble something from the Twilight soundtrack.

I'm sure they make a great live band, but listening to them on your iPod just isn't the same.
