Tori Amos

A virtuoso in the truest sense of the word, Tori Amos started playing the piano aged one and by 7 years old was able to play anything she heard straight back. She was the youngest ever scholar at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore but also got kicked out aged 11 for insisting on writing her own music.

Technically, she eclipses every other girl with a piano, or boy with a piano, on the pop scene. In every live show, she plays a couple of numbers using a piano with one hand and a harpsichord with the other while singing at the top of her lungs. Even if you are a grizzled rock veteran, you won’t have seen anything like this since Jimi Hendrix. She’s got mad skills.

Tori Amos writes heartfelt, non commercial rock and pop tunes which challenge the audience, with tough lyrics confronting loss, and notably rape. This fragile but sharp edged approach has given her a unique connection to her devoted fans who feel that she speaks to and for them, and indeed, the lady has a more genuine dialogue with her fans through shows and the internet than many a star, although she is essentially shy and retiring.

Tori Amos fans are really serious. Michael Stipe of R.E.M once asked her if he could borrow them, presumably alluding to their love and attention when she plays. Among her wider circle of admirers, you will find virtually every serious rock musician. Not only can she play the backside off a piano, but her lyrics are so clever and charged, they inspire balladeers and poets from across the spectrum of music.

Tori is both a remarkable studio musician and one of the most technical and electrifying performers alive today.
