It's no accident that footage of Bono
parading with a white flag with 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' blaring in the background is the defining moment of U2's early career - there's rarely been a band that believed so deeply in rock's potential for revolution as U2, and there's rarely been band that didn't care if they looked like dicks in the process.
Spawning in 1976 just before punk broke, U2 made a name for themselves from the start as a morally righteous, stattaco guitar spouting four piece with a penchant for grandiose statements, weird sunglasses and crusading. Gaining true stratospheric status after the release of 1987's 'Joshua Tree', they are also one of the most popular bands in rock history.
However. by the 1990's the wheels had begun to come off a bit. Reinventing themselves as an self referencing ironic dance/rock band, U2 uncoupled the theatrical pomp from the earnest political sloganeering and despite slashing world date and helping charities the world over, the band have never looked like putting it back together. Bono even tried to rope in Geldof and the starving poor of Africa to regain his campaigning status, but there's only so much being told to conserve water by a guy in bug glasses that most people can take.
Still, the band remain massively popular, and despite recently becoming puppets to corporate America, you can't deny that they at least one
good song.
