White Belt Yellow Tag

Awesome, is the word for the noise put out by this Yorkshire two-piece. Using epic guitar noise and drums allied to a powerful northern vocal, they create epic indie that matches the volume and drive of a U2 stadium-filler. Not bad, for two lads mucking about with an 8-track.

However, their early sound is a touch derivative. The slashed guitars and percussive drumbeat recalls Californication-era Peppers... an admirable influence, perhaps, but combined with a n Arctic-Monkeys-alike vocal style and cleverness, the band feels like listening to a 2002 fusion mixtape. And in those days, music was crap.

White Belt Yellow Tag – You're Not Invicible
Distiller Records

An impressively epic showcase for the power of this two-piece band. White Belt Yellow Tag consist of just two lads from Arctic Monkey land, but they sound more like the full U2 line-up on this number, with wailing guitars and tight but reverberating drums underpinning a soaring vocal.

Mind you, listening to U2 has been a fundamentally boring experience since around 1989 and this record, while impressive on a technical and musical level, has a definite 'dull' quality. 3/5
