Will Young

You've got to give Will Young some credit. Few reality TV talent show winners ever manage to gain more than fleeting success in the big bad music world.

Mind you, Will vs Gareth Gates was the original Pop Idol rivalry. Everybody in the country watched it or knew what was going on. And, as with later pop talent shows, it quickly became evident that the front runners actually had a hell of a lot of talent.

Will was the most popular, the housewives choice throughout the series and they obviously coped with him coming out, because he's retained a huge fan base, famously including Jeremy Clarkson.

Will is a big fan of the ballad and these days he's a bit of a national treasure, well liked by everyone, but worshiped in a few places. A bit like a younger, less bonkers Cliff.

'It's the simple things in life that get me down, like always being right'. Sounds pretty grim, mate. Not as depressing, though, as being mistaken for a waiter by The Hoff.

This is brilliant – a probable, deserving number one. Young's producer Eg White (real name) has added the glorious string quartet outbursts that no self-respecting weepy goes without, and gets Will to do those mid-note demi-tone-wavers that make you think Adele and Duffy have memorable voices. In fact, it's all Eg. 4/5
