Stephen Schwartz is a musical theatre composer best known for the hit musical
Wicked. Born in New York City in 1948, he studied piano and composition at the Juilliard School of Music while in high school and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 1968 with a B.F.A. in Drama.
Upon coming back to live in New York City, he went to work as a producer for RCA Records, but quickly moved into theatre composing. His first musical,
Godspell, won two Grammys amongst other awards. He quickly followed it with
Pippin. His other works include
The Baker's Wife, Children of Eden and lyrics for four Disney movies,
Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Enchanted and
The Prince of Egypt, for which he also wrote the music.
