Bethnal Green - Things to do in London

Bethnal Green
Things to do in Bethnal Green

Situated in the heart of London's East End is Bethnal Green. The area has been a part of the wider regeneration of East London over recent years, and is now home to much of London's young creative generation. While not as lively after dark as neighbouring Brick Lane and Shoreditch, Bethnal Green is still rich with pubs and restaurants, as well as galleries and art spaces.

The area was bombed heavily during the Blitz, however the Church of St John is a rare example of a surviving building by great British architect Sir John Soane.

Places to go in Bethnal Green

The Star of Bethnal Green
Excellent food and great music make this pub one of the best in the area. Quirky, cool and fun, weekends at the Star will host DJs playing until the early hours, while weeknights are perfect for a quiet drink and a meal in comfortable surroundings.

Bethnal Green Working Men's Club
For alternative cabaret and performance art, Bethnal Green Working Men's Club is the place to go. From David Lynch-esque cabaret nights to Coney Island themed parties, imagination is the key at this backstreet club. One of London's most unique entertainment spaces.

Museum of Childhood
A branch of the V&A museum dedicated to childhood, this huge redbrick structure houses items ranging from toys to clothing, all focused around our ideas of youth and children. Naturally, it's a great place to go with the little ones, but it's equally as interesting as an adult visitor.

Columbia Road Flower Market
Taking place each and every Sunday, Columbia Road Flower Market consists of nothing more than a group of market traders selling all sorts of botanical wonderments. So far, so normal, right? Well when you factor in the fact that Columbia Road is easily the most charming pub in Bethnal Green and that the Royal Oak, George and The Birdcage are all found there, and you have the ultimate Sunday supplement reader’s fly-trap.

Sebright Arms
Once an old, run-down workman's kind of place, The Sebright has had something of a face-lift recently, replacing the cheap phish with fancy real ales, the downstairs basement with a purpose-built gig space and the bar-snacks with some of the best burgers in town. They’ve also replaced the grey old men who used to drink there with beard-sporting fixie-riders, but hey, you’ve gotta love those guys, right?
