Camberwell - Things to do in London

Camberwell College of Arts
Things to do in Camberwell

Sharing its name with celebrated arts college, Camberwell has long been a hub of creativity and a popular haunt of South London’s continually growing artistic community. Much like it’s neighbouring district, Peckham, Camberwell has had to deal with an undeserved reputation as being a bit of a ‘rough area’. However, those in the know understand that appearances can often be deceiving.

With its hordes of art students and creative types it might be easy to draw comparisons to Dalston or Shoreditch but it’s a thriving area in its own right with plenty of things to see and do.

Places to go in Camberwell

Café No. 67.
Café No. 67 is stone’s throw away from the Camberwell college of Arts and right next to the South London Gallery. By day it’s a cosy little café with a robust menu boasting packed with daily specials, cakes and top class coffee. By night it operates as a relaxed bistro style restaurant with its own private dining area. With one of London’s best gallery spaces right next door it’s pretty much the perfect place to get some culture and a bite to eat at the same time.

FM Mangal.
Anyone who has ever set foot in South London knows that once you’re there, you’re never at a loss for places to grab a greasy box of just about anything. But if you’re ever in the mood for a slightly less soul destroying meal then FM Mangal is your best bet. Slap bang in the middle of Camberwell Church Street and home to best Turkish food south of the river, this unassuming restaurant and takeaway serves up a large selection of grilled perfection.

The Tiger.
Standing heads and tails above the rest of Camberwell’s boozers, The Tiger provides a relaxed atmosphere, great booze and stacks of quirky charm. It doesn’t mess around the  ‘good pub’ formula too much, but as the saying goes ‘If it ain't broke don’t fix it’. Friendly staff and an always impressive selection of music playing over the stereo make it an ace spot for rowdy pre-drinks or a chilled hang out sesh’.

Arcadia Missa
The recently opened Arcadia Missa is the latest place to rub shoulders with Camberwell’s affable art school crowd. Part studio space and part gallery, it places a strong focus on experimenting with and posing questions to visual culture at large. In laymen’s terms Arcadia Missa is a must see venue for anyone keen discovering up and coming artists and exploring new ideas.
