Things to do in Elephant and Castle
Once a part of rural Surrey and the sight of a good few religious martyrs meeting a fiery end lashed to a stake in the middle ages, this bustling intersection formerly known as Newington takes a more relaxed attitude to its cosmopolitan populous these days. Based around the merging of two colossal roundabouts, a shopping centre and several vast highrise conurbations, it has a vibrant bustling atmosphere and also once counted Charlie Chaplin and Michael Caine amongst its residents. Today you may well bump into Richard D James, aka that Glitch High Admiral, Aphex Twin, as he lives in a converted bank in the area.
In 2004 major redevelopment of Elephant and Castle began as the government decided that the battlements were looking a bit peaky. As such a £1.5billion regeneration scheme has been set underway looking to return The Elephant to her pre war glory when she was a major central London hub. The area is a clubland mecca as home to one of the world’s biggest clubbing brands, Ministry Of Sound. It also plays host to vibrant independent art space Corsica Studios and as well as a number of museums and galleries including The Cumming Museum and The Imperial War Museum.
Places to go in Elephant and Castle
Ministry of Sound
The last of the super-clubs, Ministry of Sound is a place where the nineties never really died, and is filled to the rafters each and every weekend with hardcore clubbers and tourists all looking to live it up like Pete Tong was still rocking it.
Corsica Studios
If Ministry of Sound represents Britain's clubbing past, then Corsica Studios is it’s future. Located under an arch right behind Elephant and Castle's main station, this art space/turned club has a brilliant reputation when it comes to finding out new sounds. Every Londoner should pay it a visit at least once!
The Cumming Museum
Unfortunately overlooked by many a museum lover, the Cumming Museum holds a collection that features British social history, ethnography, decorative art, geology, textiles, natural history, prints, coins, ceramics, ancient Egyptian and Etruscan objects.
Imperial War Museum
Undergoing a major refurb, the Imperial War Museum offers an exceptional collection of military artefacts with exhibitions relating to all aspects of warfare, from the mechanics and machinery of war to the social impacts and costs. A national institution.
