New Cross - Things to do in London

Things to do in New Cross

Largely known for it’s many student watering holes and proximity to Millwall’s Den, New Cross has a lot to offer anyone on the lookout for a break from the well tread streets of Dalston and Hackney.

The opening of the East London line may have quite literally put it on the map, but New Cross has always been one of the South London’s most exciting quarters. The birthplace of Gary Oldman, Blur and ill-fated music genre New Rave, it is a hotbed of cultural activity kept vibrant by a yearly influx of new Goldsmiths University students.

Places to go in New Cross

Horniman Museum
A fixture of the area since Victorian times the Horniman Museum boasts an internationally important collection musical instruments, anthropology and natural history - as well as a 16 acre royal garden. Unlike a lot of museums, the Horniman lets you get hands on with its collection: many of the objects are free to pick up, play with or even try on. Best of all, it’s free!

New Cross House
Formerly known Goldsmiths Tavern, this newly renovated bar is an impressive hybrid of the traditional boozer and the modern gastropub. Feel free to have a round of darts whilst supping from its selection of seasonal ales and lagers, or sip continental beers between a game of ping pong or table football. And if pub games aren’t your bag, you can always have a go at the piano or dine in the gorgeous beer garden.

The Waiting Room
Technically part of Deptford but only ten minutes walk or bus ride from New Cross Gate station, The Waiting Room is a newly opened veggie coffee joint. On top of serving some of the best fair trade coffee this side of the Thames, its friendly staff serve up a tooth aching selection vegan cakes and mouth watering daily specials. Situated near Deptford Market, it’s also prime real estate for people watching.

Utrophia
Residing in an old ice cream factory, Utrophia is a gallery, live venue and performance space rolled into one package. Acting as a platform for the promotion of local artists and creatives from all around the globe, Utrophia is a melting pot of new ideas and a shining example of the areas diversity. Turn up for all manner film screenings, live events and performances.
