Things to do on Oxford Street
About Oxford Street
Running from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court road, Oxford Street is the busiest shopping high street in Europe, providing one and a half miles of retail heaven with every major store only a few steps from the next one. Don't expect to be grabbing one-off pieces or vintage bargains, it's chain stores all the way, but all the major high-street players are represented with numerous flagship stores dotted along the way.
The historic Selfridges department store is well worth a visit just to check out the impressive window displays. For bargain clothes at the other end of the spectrum head to the Primark flagship opposite. Further down the street is the unmissable Topshop, set over 4 floors with an ever-evolving clothing range, and with nail bars, a blow drying salon and a café, it's an easy place to lose an afternoon in.
The crowds can become overwhelming, especially on a weekend, so for some respite head to the continental St Christopher’s Place, the perfect secluded area for a pit stop. It has numerous cafés, bars and restaurants to relax and recharge in, and, if you can still face it, more shops.
Once the shops drop their shutters and the crowds disperse, Oxford Street becomes something of a ghost town, offering little in the way of nightlife. Luckily it's only a hop skip and a jump from neighbouring Soho, which has a lively bar scene. Oxford Street is home, however, to the famous 100 Club, which has seen the likes of The Sex Pistols, Louis Armstrong, Mick Jagger and George Melly grace the small, simple stage since it opened in 1942. Nowadays the club continues the tradition of nurturing underground talent, and sometimes hosts secret gigs from big acts taking a break from arenas.
