Elton John found himself so moved by Stephen Daldry's award winning film Billy Elliot at Cannes that he teamed up with the original crew to write a score for a West End musical. The result was spectacular; the show has won countless awards, including four Laurence Oliviers, and has maintained its position as the UK's number show since its opening in 2005.
Set in the midst of the 1984 miners' strike, the show's emotional majesty comes straight from the hard edge of the political events that reshaped Britain forever. The power of genuine historical struggle as recreated on the stage gives the show such force that none bar the stoniest of hearts can fail to be moved. The music is fresh and complements the focal point of the show, the fantastic Billy Elliot?s dancing, to full effect.
This truly is a musical to cherish. Billy Elliot's progression from miner's son to dancer is naturally dynamic, without the cloying sentimentality or sickening cliche that often accompanies the transfer from the silver screen to musical. The show is the current undisputed heavyweight champion of the British musical scene and appears unlikely to be shifted by any imported contenders. It is an inspired collaboration that has resulted in a masterpiece of theatre.
