New Musical Express is Britain's longest serving and best regarded rock, pop and indie magazine, a scathing review from these guys is the holy grail of any garage band on their first steps to fame. Each Friday Koko gives itself over to a live showcase for new talent picked by the magazine's writers - which ensures a huge breadth and depth in the selection process, and some very good bands on stage as a result.
After the live show everyone kicks back for a few hours of vinyl pleasure. The DJs are usually minor celebs from the indie and rock circuits although every now and again you get a frustrated muso from the magazine's sub editing department barging onto the wheels of steel to take the crowd on a musical odyssey from the Stone Roses to Daft Punk.
