If you're going to call it Damon Albarn's Dr Dee, then yeah, people are going to focus on the man behind the show. But don't.

There is nothing classically Albarn about this show because there's little that is indeed classically Albarn except maybe his vocal which he does lend to the show via on stage appearances. But he changes with wind and while he's racked up a lot of creative credits, he's not defined by them.

His layered opera, directed by Rufus Norris, is metaphorical at every level. It follows Dr Dee, the knowledge hungry adviser to Elizabeth I, shaper of the British Empire and member of the occult. He lived powerful ad wealthy and died penniless and disgraced and Albarn tells his story through pop vocals and 16th century instruments.
