Shaftesbury Theatre, 210 Shaftesbury Avenue, Covent Garden, WC2H 8DP

Theatre: , Musicals, Comedy

How Much: £60.00 (Highest Price) , £20.00 (Lowest Price)
John Waters' savagely hilarious tragedy about an obscenely fat girl who dreams of being on a TV game show, was always ripe for a musical version. However until recently nobody would have produced this tale of disgusting, rude people and their sick fantasies, originally starring oversize transvestite Divine: it is just too rude.

This stage version is a little more upbeat, turning the tragicomic heroines into champions of civil rights, whose terrible, clumsy desperation for fame serves instead to highlight the idiocy and prejudice of the media.

The effect is a much more upbeat show, and with outstanding musical set pieces, hilarious characters and a plot hat has you well and truly rooting for the girls against the system, this has turned into an enduring smash. Incidentally, it's ended the dire run of the Shaftesbury Theatre as well.

A deserved, daring triumph.
