The British Council began collecting art in 1938 to promote the UK art scene. Since then they have compiled one of the most impressive collections of 20th Century British art in the world, with over 8,000 works.

Over the course of 2009, 10 these works will be displayed in the Whitechapel at any one time. Right now they're focusing on the inspirations of myth and legend.
