Marking the 150th anniversary of Kenneth Grahame's birth, the Finborough presents an odd but compelling piece of social and literary history by David Gooderson.
Starting with the delivery of flowers to his widow Elspeth Grahame, this play is essentially a flood of memories, with the characters of Toad, Badger, Rat and Mole from the classic children's story Wind In The Willows coming to life to help tell the story of their creator: Kenneth Grahame was an extraordinary man who was both the steady and reliable Secretary of the Bank of England, and the flyaway romantic who created Mr Toad based upon his own tearaway son.
The story begins as a lyrical celebration of an imaginary world which has touched millions of children, and ends as a tragedy as the young man upon whom Mr Toad was based descends into alcoholism, madness and death.
So, not your regular tribute night but a riveting night of theatre nonetheless.
