Flitting between and blurring dreams and reality, Offenbach's final opera recalls a man's lost loves, based on the stories of German writer E.T.Hoffmann.
As poet Hoffmann finds himself hopelessly infatuated once again, this time with a demanding prima donna, he looks back over the other three loves of his life.
