The highest grossing first weekend in West End history is a title held by this Broadway-born prequel to The Wizard of Oz. The show is as slick and professional as one would expect from a musical of such pedigree, and packs a considerable emotional punch. It takes a look at the legend of Oz from a different viewpoint, and finds out what turned the Wicked Witch of the West into a baddie.
Turns out our green lady friend was actually a kind hearted pacifist working to liberate Oz from the clutches of an evil Wizard. Her nasty side stems from a failed romance and a long-running feud with her best friend. Oh, and the flying monkeys that terrified us all as children weren't the devil's spawn, but simple simians cynically manipulated to terrorise children and their scaredy-cat friends by, you've guessed it, the Wizard!
Oz purists might be unhappy with the revisionism but millions have flocked to see this show thanks to a winning mixture of girl power, great music and a genuinely poignant plot-line. Mainly, though it's the music of Stephen Schwartz which makes this one of the most enchanting shows in recent years.
