On the banks of the River Thames, the London Wetland Centre is about 25 minutes from London's CBD. As part of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, you can pack a picnic and head to the 43 hectare wetlands for a chance to watch some very rare and endangered species of wildlife engage in their daily activities.
Right now there are more than 180 species of wild bird and countless other wetland creatures to see whilst walking through the paths built between the various lakes, pools and lagoons. There's even six bird hides to have a sneak peek at the wildlife.
Catered for a family outing, the visitor centre is equipped with a restaurant, gift shop, glass observatory overlooking the nature reserve and a children's discovery centre.
Open seven days a week, you need to check the site for more details on seasonal opening times.
