In 1977 New Yorker Maureen Paley arrived in the UK for a masters degree in photography at the Royal College of Art. By 1984 she had established a gallery in her East End house, from which she hosted numerous shows involving some of the brightest young artists of the YBA era.
The success of the project, and presumably the desire to stop strangers wandering around her home, led to the creation of the Maureen Paley gallery in 1999. A matriarchal figure to East London's artistic community, she continues to present interesting and varied shows of contemporary art in all mediums.
