Blue Elephant Theatre

59a Bethwin Road, Camberwell, SE5 0XT
Tel: 020 7701 0100

One of the best fringe theatres in London, the Blue Elephant in Camberwell stages everything from new writing and modern dance to well worn classics. They also run 'work in progress' sessions where audiences can see material being rehearsed and edited, sharing in the creative process.

An innovative reputation has seen the Blue Elephant become something of a magnet for new writers and mini dance seasons. Expect a lively audience, a high standard of productions and the odd moment of innovative brilliance. The Blue Elephant is both a brilliant fringe venue and a popular local theatre.

The Blue Elephant is featured in John's survey of the Best Fringe Theatres in London

Wins itself incredible extra bonus Fringe Points for being situated more or less in the middle of a council estate. The theatre is a cool (in the sense of skirting cold) basement with good enough facilities but no backstage or point of entry short of a sidedoor: fine for a lot of the dance/physical theatre shown there. They programme a lot of young companies, which ups the consumer risk accordingly. There's a comfy café playing live music, and rather a lot of arts college poseurs in the audience.

Having only been to The Blue Elephant once, in order to see an absurdist Swedish caberet duo (whose show climaxed with a reimagining of the theme to Titanic, complete with model toy ship), I am, perhaps, ill-equipped to comment on the place as a venue or theatrical arts hub.

But what I can say is that The Blue Elephant is a delightfully ramshackle theatre with creaky steps, about sixteen seats and a bar with one type of beer and two types of wine: red or white - you'll have to go elsewhere for a wider selection of grapes.

Based on what we saw, The Blue Elephant takes risks, which suggests that sometimes you might see something of just-above school play standard, but that you will, occasionally, come across a transcendent work of blistering art. Like that Titanic thing.
