Formerly a Goth institution, the Hobgoblin-Dev (the new owners couldn't quite relinquish the name) is still a haven for the black clad and alternative crowds, though they've dispensed with the mandatory dress code and opened themselves up to a wider clientele.
On the whole, this more inclusive ethos has been welcomed by the regulars and it's a really good thing for casual fans of the alternative scene looking for a great pint and some even better music, but who've accidentally come out in menswear or whatever. The staff will still eject anybody looking for either trouble or UK garage and this is a cherished day and night time haunt for the alt crowd.
Devvy regulars can be a bit intimidating to the uninitiated, being an assortment of gigantic, tattooed, pierced and pissed up Goths, but you won't find a friendlier place in London. With cracking indie, rock, metal and even small slices of classic pop on the sound system, it's hard to pick a moment to leave: looks like closing time again.
