The Roundhouse

110a Chalk Farm Road, Camden, NW1 8EH
Tel: 020 7424 9991

This Grade II listed engine shed in Camden was renovated in the '90s to give local youngsters a multi-purpose space in which to showcase art, drama and live music.

The Roundhouse enjoys massive support among the north London artistic community and has been a huge success with culture vultures and local kids alike. The Chalk Farm location gives it a refreshing detachment from the rest of Camden, and their calendar is filled with excellent events.

As befitting an indoor space of this size in this area of north London, live music has also returned to the venue. The Ramones played here in the '70s, and now they boast a steady stream of international stars on their stage. A real asset to this area.

You've got to respect a venue that gives young people a chance to get involved in the arts. All of the gigs and events that go on at the Roundhouse are unique and creative, reflecting the spirit of the surrounding area.

Having only seen gigs at The Roundhouse I can safely say it's one of the most comfortable gig experiences due to the sheer amount of space in the main area.

Yet don't let the vast amount of room act as any sort of deterrent- the atmosphere naturally kicked in once the gig got going with the space magically disappearing as everyone threw themselves to the front. Added bonus was that the queue for the bar was also pretty minor, making for a great gigging experience. Worth a pop!

The wide variety of acts aside, the building is amazing. With all the necessities close at hand, you never need queue up for longer than 5 minutes for that all important beer. The smoking terrace is ample and boasts great views, offering a refreshing alternative to many venues ignorance of smokers needs.

The arena itself allows for a great viewing of the act, and the atmosphere is great; you can truly appreciate the gig without being shunted unwillingly to the front.

I love this venue for its intimacy - really is incredibly special seeing big acts perform in such a small space.
