Janet's Bar may be a hideaway but it's far from undiscovered. In fact, it's hugely popular with locals and commuters alike. Tucked beneath the Brompton Hotel, it's an intimate little venue done in dark wood and is lent oodles of character by all the personal touches- photographs of visitors and regulars papering the walls, hand-made menus, and all the banners and keepsakes left over from previous celebations (i.e. a party hat, a St Patrick's Day banner, a peanut bowl shaped like a pumpkin from Halloween!) It all goes to show that the bar is unpretentious, laid back and fun.
The drinks selection is extensive. There's a good wine list including Janet's own house white, as well as champagne by the flute or bottle. More impressive, however, is the cocktail menu. There are many to choose from, both classic and invented by Janet herself. All the drinks are worth the price you pay, which is good value considering the location (at the heart of South Kensington), and you can get complementary snacks with your drinks- hot dogs, popcorn, PB and J sandwiches and nuts on the house.
Janet's also started some new deals like the £2.50 coffee and muffin combo during the day and the £3 vodka-liquor mix shots served on selected weeknights to the crowds of stylish young professionals looking for a place to liase before heading out to Boujis (the nightclub across the road).
There's live music every night (always variety, as there are three different singers) played at a comfortable volume so you don't have to shout to make yourself heard! The service is actually incomparable- wherever you choose to sit or stand (there's a little terrace outside that's very popular) you never have to wait around to have your order taken or for your drinks to come. The bar is also open til 2.30 am, way after all the others around it.
I highly recommend Janet's Bar. I've been going there for years and I keep going back!
