Janet's Bar may be a hideaway but it's far from undiscovered. In fact, it's hugely popular with locals and commuters alike. Tucked beneath the Brompton Hotel, it's an intimate little venue done in dark wood and is lent oodles of character by all the personal touches- photographs of visitors and regulars papering the walls, hand-made menus, and all the banners and keepsakes left over from previous celebations (i.e. a party hat, a St Patrick's Day banner, a peanut bowl shaped like a pumpkin from Halloween!) It all goes to show that the bar is unpretentious, laid back and fun.

The drinks selection is extensive. There's a good wine list including Janet's own house white, as well as champagne by the flute or bottle. More impressive, however, is the cocktail menu. There are many to choose from, both classic and invented by Janet herself. All the drinks are worth the price you pay, which is good value considering the location (at the heart of South Kensington), and you can get complementary snacks with your drinks- hot dogs, popcorn, PB and J sandwiches and nuts on the house.

Janet's also started some new deals like the £2.50 coffee and muffin combo during the day and the £3 vodka-liquor mix shots served on selected weeknights to the crowds of stylish young professionals looking for a place to liase before heading out to Boujis (the nightclub across the road).

There's live music every night (always variety, as there are three different singers) played at a comfortable volume so you don't have to shout to make yourself heard! The service is actually incomparable- wherever you choose to sit or stand (there's a little terrace outside that's very popular) you never have to wait around to have your order taken or for your drinks to come. The bar is also open til 2.30 am, way after all the others around it.

I highly recommend Janet's Bar. I've been going there for years and I keep going back!

My husband and I love Janet's Bar. As soon as you step inside, you feel like you've been transported to a New York City dive bar. It's got a cool, unpretentious atmosphere, which is rare to find in South Ken. Also rare is the live music, one of the best things about Janet's Bar, in my opinion. A guitarist (who takes requests and plays pretty much anything!) serenades you softly while you enjoy your drinks. I'm a big cocktail lover, so I enjoy going back to sample all of Janet's creations. At the moment I'm obsessed with a frangelico mojito, which is to die for. My husband loves the large selection of whiskeys. There's also a wine list, beer, and soft drinks. I urge you to try Janet's Love Lotion, a really good fruity cocktail. The service is amazing. You're never kept waiting for your order to be taken, so there's no toe-tapping at the bar! The friendly bar staff will whisk the drinks to your table in minutes. You'll even get offered free snacks. Last time it was popcorn and PB&J sandwiches. Very American! Janet herself will occasionally swing by the bar. She's got a loyal following and it's not hard to see why. She's welcoming, easy to talk to, and makes you feel like her priority is that you have an excellent night out. There's outdoor seating, popular among punters, even in the winter months. Overall, I give this bar a 10 out of 10. You'd have to travel Stateside to find anything else like it.

If you're looking for a bar to recommend to someone you don't like - where the staff are rude, the cocktails really don't get much worse and prices are extortionate, this is your place.

I've travelled a decent amount, done my fair share of drinking and eating out in a fair few countries and I've never written a review online, but this place resulted in enough firsts that I figured it was time to pop that cherry too and share them.

* Before this, never had I been to a bar where the staff take payment before they've even checked if they have what you want, let alone making it.

* Before this, never had I been to a dive bar where the drink prices were so disproportionately high when compared to the surroundings, quality of service and quality of beverages -

Roaming the streets of South Kensington last night in search of a screen to watch what was left of the open ceremony, a woman on the pavement was looking for preys: it was Janet!

She quickly sized the opportunity and shouted "y'all looking for a screen? there's one right here but you gotta buy drinks!"

We all looked at each other and thought: we are in! So we went in. Big mistake.

We could not even finish the first round of drinks that Janet sent the young girl to our table to push for more orders, then Janet herself came to tell us we had to move our chairs closer to the table as "the bar was about to get packed and she needed space" then the boy came to give us an ultimatum: order more drinks or leave.....then the final blow: Janet raided our table saying she needed it for some customers that had just come in with a reservation.

How rude, pushy and agressive!!!!!

The bar was empty(ish) there was no sign of a crowd mobbing the place....what was she on?!!!

We stood up and left pretty angry....what an undignified way of running a tatty bar!! The older the bar, the greater the need for management to compensate the physical inadequacies....normally!! But in this case: the tattier the business, the cockier the Janet... more like it!!!

She literally shouted: "GET OUT"....yep, that's because some of us did not order more drinks and others were still drinking theirs. Unreal.

As we stood outside on Janet's familiar pavement gathering our thoughts on the unfortunate encounter, a group of girls came out of the bar and having heard it all just said: "expensive plastic surgery clearly requires more maintenance!" We couldn't agree more.

Cheerio Janet, and indeed.....let the Games begin!
