The Royal Albert Hall is one of London's most prestigious venues for live music and events. As the host of the annual BBC Proms, it's become synonymous with classical music and shows here are usually a highlight of London's cultural calendar.

Although known for its status as an awesome live music venue the hall is used for a wide range of events from poetry recitals to Cirque de Soleil and sporting events including the first Sumo wrestling tournament ever to be held outside Japan. It's even been host to the odd tennis match.

A versatile, distinguished venue, it also contains a staggering number of restaurants and bars.

As a born-and-raised American, I never imagined that some day I would find myself waving the Union flag, singing God Save the Queen at the top of my voice with 5000 other Brits. Or if I did, firm reminders in the forms of American Football, the Star Spangled Banner and apple pie knocked the notion out of my head. Never the less for the Last Night of the BBC Proms in 2008 that is exactly where I found myself.

I had visited RAH once before for a Proms event earlier in the season but the Last Night really showcased the true brilliance of the venue. Packed together from floor to ceiling, listeners all reveled in the classical music with a shared comradeship only possible after twelve hours of queuing and a venue that seems smaller than its actual capacity.

The acoustics leave something to be desired, especially in the lower arena during a crowded show, and unless you're prepared to bring a step ladder, don't expect to see the stage if you'd opted for the cheap seats and are promming near the back of the arena but overall this venue offers enough glamour and enjoyment to offset these minor grumbles.

This is a really special venue, but one I didn't go to for a long time because I assumed it dealt only with classical music. The Royal Albert Hall puts on a huge range of musical events and I've been to see some great comedy here too.
