A church was first built on this site in 1080, only to be destroyed first by the Great Fire, rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren and heavily damaged in the Blitz.
Only those born within the sound of the Bow Bells are considered true cockneys, and the same bells called Dick Whittington back to London in the 14th Century. The church of St Mary le Bow has weaved its way into the historical tapestry of London on numerous occasions.
These days, the pealing of the bells still attracts a crowd, and they hold regular classical recitals in the various chambers.
