The Chambers Gallery is an interesting venue, and quite a rarity in London. Although a number of British artists are well represented, the major strength of the gallery’s collection and exhibitions currently lies in art from the Soviet Union. Exhibitions encourage the viewer to explore worlds often overlooked by larger institutions; Socialist Realist art, commonly ridiculed in its time, is an extremely interesting world when examined as a retrospective. When placed alongside the works of Soviet non-conformist artists (from before and after the collapse of the Soviet Union), the shows are compelling.
