Theatre Royal Drury Lane

Catherine Street, Covent Garden, WC2B 5JF
Tel: 020 7494 5200

There has been a Theatre Royal on this site since 1663, and for much of that time this venerable institution was the largest playhouse in London. The current theatre was put up in 1812 and is still decorated in the sumptuous style of that bygone age. The vast auditorium is one of the most luxurious and impressive in Europe and this place has a remarkable, rich history.

In 1665 King Charles II fell in love with Nell Gwyn while watching her perform at the Theatre Royal. Not many theatres can say that. In the early 20th century this was the staging house for Noel Coward's greatest ensemble play, Cavalcade while Ivor Novello also made the place his home in the interwar years. Since 1945 the Theatre Royal has been synonymous with big budget musical extravaganzas, and recently became the jewel in the crown of Andrew Lloyd Weber's theatre empire.

A palatial, magical setting that adds a special quality to every production it hosts, the Theatre Royal is one of London's finest.
