SPACE was founded in 1968 by Peter Townsend (who? no not that one) Peter Sedgley and
Bridget Riley as a means to provide artists with affordable studio space in London.
The organisation began by leasing St. Katherine's dock for £500 a year, making it suitable for artists' studios with help from, among others, Henry Moore. Since then SPACE has helped to secure working environments for artists in a wide variety of London locations with varying degrees of permanency.
Artists associated with the organisation at one time or another include: Fergus Muir, Iwona Blazwick, Sara Selwood,
Alison Wilding, Tony Bevan,
Ian McKeever, David Nash, Michael Kenny,
Langlands and Bell,
Mona Hatoum, Michael Porter and
Richard Wilson.
With refurbishment completed in May 2006, the Triangle Building on Mare Street in Hackney is now the SPACE base, as it were. The building includes gallery space that plays host to a wide variety of exhibitions by artists working in the studios. As you can probably guess from the list of people who've been associated with SPACE, these exhibitions are frequently brilliant.
