This beautiful house inhabited by Samuel Johnson between 1748 and 1759 is something of a holy grail to all avid etymologists. As any fule no, that period saw our friend composing the very first English dictionary, as well as keeping up a steady stream of witty, observant and sometimes dull remarks, all recorded at points around the house.
Tucked away behind Fleet Street, this charming mini museum contains paneled rooms, a pine staircase, and a collection of period furniture, prints and portraits, along with all the history you could possibly absorb in one visit. What’s more, it’s a real bargain – you can take the kids for just £1.50. Although it's fair to say that to do so would constitute an unusually miserable outing.
Perhaps we’re just MTV kids here at Spoonfed but we’re not recommending this museum to anyone but the most studious types. Academically interested? A fiend for linguistic detail? An avid lover of new words? Then what are you waiting for?
