An absolute gem of a museum for anyone with an interest in interior design, an instinct for spying on their neighbours, or who just like practical things. The Geffrye Museum is a collection of different rooms decorated in the style of various decades, a “walk through time” from the living rooms of the 17th Century with their doily covers and hunting pictures to the Japanese influenced minimalist chic of today. There are even some kitchens along the way for the really nosy.
It's a fascinating place if you have any interest in nesting, home building or style. Interior designers and compulsive shoppers can flit about admiring layouts and wishing they owned stuff, while DIY types can sizes up the furnishings and get a few ideas. It’s rare to see the aesthetic and the practical married so neatly and this is one of the joys of the museum. One of the pitfalls is the shop, which although not expensive is absolutely rammed full of desirable kit.
