Old Blue Last

39 Great Eastern Street, Hoxton and Shoreditch, EC2A 3ES
Tel: 020 7739 7033

As you would expect for a pub owned by Vice, The Old Blue Last is usually filled with the East London fashionista. But don’t let that fool you, upstairs is one of the most intimate venues you’ll ever come across in this vast metropolis.

Because the crowd are almost quite literally standing on the stage, The Old Blue Last has this awesome power to make any gig turn into a beer-soaked, freak out, dance party, which is particularly excellent when you fancy a 3-hour Born Against-style slugfest on a Thursday night.

The Old Blue Last is one of Spoonfed's Best Indie Venues in London.

When I walked into the Old Blue Last, I was quite skeptical that this would be much of a concert venue. The old boozer feel on the ground floor didn't exactly inspire musical confidence (nor did the fact that the concert was set to begin imminently and there was no music equipment). So it was with some surprise that I discovered the first floor was already packed and well prepped for the show. Definitely wins points for a unique setting and as a great venue for small shows but there were a number of sound issues throughout the night and it was a little small for the crowd. Would happily go back to see a band I know and like with my mates but wouldn't necessarily go for another unknown "up and coming" Shoreditch indie act.

I’ve got mixed feelings about this place. Yes, they have some brilliant bands and it’s not the most expensive place in Shoreditch. I love the slightly dirty vibe of the bar and the free frequent free shows are a blessing to cash-strapped indie and metal lovers. The only problem is the punters. Not all of them obviously, but I’ve bumped into some truly vile characters here and it does have a habit of attracting a range of minor celebrities who prance around the place making a nuisance; naming no Geldofs…ahem…I mean names.
