After some initial branding difficulties, The Hoxton Pony has finally settled upon its name. One wonders why it took so long to realise that 'The Stoned Pony' was probably the worst name for any bar, anywhere, EVER.

But it's here now in all its shiny high-concept glory. There's a taxidermy diorama behind the bar, super-snazzy red tables, ultraviolet light and mirrors downstairs, and a big wall sculpture that my friend described as the Old Street 'Guernica'.

The menu is meant to be a kind of fancy reworking of old East End grub and so there's stuff like pig's head terrine, tarragon jellied eels, and braised this and that. There's also regular DJ nights, with a pretty broad variety of music played: the opening week saw Trevor Jackson behind the decks, followed by one of the chaps from the Horrors.

But cocktails are probably the main thing: the bar's owner is Gerry Calabrese, son of cocktail guru Salvatore, and the list is pretty extensive. For the particularly devoted, try one of the Infusion Jars: 'Each drink on the list is served from a self-cooling infusion jar into our self styled Stoned Pony tea cups!' (branding issues yet to be fully resolved).
