On the dawn of the new millennium the Brits lead the world in creating cutting-edge art. A handful of British non-conformists have redefined the way the world views modern art and smashed the price ceiling for living artists: Hirst, Emin et al, are kings and queens of the international art scene. And White Cube is their home from home, their gallery.

At the last Hirst opening in July, Hoxton Square was inaccessible for an entire evening as asymmetric haircuts and manbag toting fashionistas strained to "be there". This gallery and installation space is literally the hottest place in contemporary art.

Owner Jay Jopling is married to controversial photographer Sam Taylor-Wood (she of the sleeping Beckham shots) and he has had the charm, application and good fortune to befriend every controversial and innovative (and stratospherically priced) modern artist from the last several generations, from Gilbert and George to the Chapman Brothers.

Never less than fascinating, this gallery is well worth a visit, and regularly features works that will enter the pantheon of art history before they are even sold. Just don't bother trying to crash a private view...
