Almeida Theatre

Almeida Street, Islington, N1 1TA
Tel: 020 7359 4404

Medium sized but massively respected North London theatre that helped put Islington on the cultural map of London and cemented North London's reputation as a hotbed of cosmopolitan liberal thought. No, seriously. When this place was bought and refurbished by Pierre Audi in 1980 nobody had even heard of Islington. Now it's the cultural heart of Europe.

A lovely theatre with a very diverse programme from Shakespeare to the most challenging new British writers, the Almeida has helped to expand the theatrical repertoire of the West End, Europe and the world. 15 productions first staged here have gone on to dominate box offices around the world.

Reviews

JayKay Friday, 11 November
Breath of fresh air to watch something that's good. It's simple, it's beautifully acted and there's no 'spectacle' - and thank God for it. Neil LaBute's dialogue is superb - crisp, funny, well-observed. And Attenborough is not stamping all over it with any kind of directorial mark - which seems to be the fashion at the mo - he simply serves the piece with a clutter-free vision. A very entertaining evening and I, at last, felt safe in the hands of people who know what they're doing - whether it's fashionable or not. Who gives a monkey's chuff about 'experimental'.
