Serpentine Gallery

Kensington Gardens, Kensington, W2 3XA
Tel: 020 7402 6075

Since opening in the mid 90s the Serpentine has become an integral part of the cultural fabric of London, with brilliant shows hosted and a full programme of musical and educational events. The gallery itself is beautiful, and wholly complemented by the greenery of Kensington Gardens that surrounds it.

With nearly a million visitors each year (all admitted free) this is a hugely popular gallery and a magnificent setting for a show. The summer pavilion, which is designed by a different architect every year and usually opened in August, is without fail the city's strangest and most phantasmagorical temporary structure; it also makes a perfect place for art based conferences, events and cups of tea.

paddy Friday, 03 October
The most special gallery in West London and a far cry from the luvvie-soaked halls of culture which dominate the area. Come sun or rain, The Serpentine's location makes it a great focal point for a long-haul hike accross the city. The shows are consistently on form and are usually highly polarising - it's a place which believes in opinion, and right to express it. From Murakami's psychedelic pop-art to McCall's ethereal light shows, the place packs a quality punch. Oh, and the summer pavilions are probably the best squandering of public resources the city has to offer - the highlight of the year's architectural zenith.
