Scala is a huge multi-purpose and well-designed venue that has a kind of unique and artsy je ne sais quoi about it. There is a finely tuned mix of live gigs and club-nights with a constant stream of the latest hot things, old timers and quality DJs.

Crowds and atmosphere vary depending on the night, but the two floors of this century old converted cinema are usually packed - a tribute to its popularity and taste in music.

The entrance bar allows for a degree of cruising and mingling, the main room offers excellent acoustics and the Glass Bar offers a haven from the dancing and moshing. And there's another room even further up with a stage, cosy booths and yet more dancing space.

There's so much room to move here, you never feel too claustrophobic and on the right night, there's no better place to be in this fair city.

I miss club nights at Scala. Saying that, I just miss Popstarz at the Scala. Any venue with that much room is always going to be good. On the other hand, gigs there aren't quite as fun if you want to get into the thick of things. The pit seems to lack unity and flows badly on the main floor, but if you want to just stand back and watch, there's probably not a better venue for it what with the raised areas all around the room...

Scala is one of those venues that is wonderfully intimate where you can watch well known bands. It is definitely worth a trip down to Scala for some fun.
