The Wellcome Collection is an absolutely brilliant place. It’s one of those rare places in London that combines museum with gallery, science with art, and serious learning with a healthy dose of fun.

Inspired by pharmacist, entrepreneur, philanthropist and collector, Sir Henry Wellcome, the museum reflects his vision to create a space where people could come to learn more about the development of medicine. But it’s also more than that: the site on Euston Road contains three exhibition spaces, the Wellcome Library, a cafe, bookshop, conference centre and members' club.

The ‘Medicine Man’ gallery contains over 500 weird and wonderful artefacts relating to human identity and health from Sir Henry's original collection. Highlights include a giant jelly baby and the guillotine blade used to execute Jean-Baptiste Carrier during the French Revolution. Nice.

Temporary exhibitions here are invariably brilliant, and all curated with thought and flair.

The Wellcome Collection is one of Spoonfed's Best Museums in London.

The Wellcome Collection is truly a gem of a museum: its permanent collection, consisting of medical curiosities the late Dr Wellcome picked up in his world travels, is amusing (and at times disturbing) to peruse; its temporary exhibitions, which always have a medical slant and tend to include mixed media, are invariably fun and informative (last year's one about the nature of sleep stands out). Best of all, it's always free, opens late on Thursdays, and dishes up nice hot food in its stylish cafe.
