Greek Street's Coach and Horses is one of the most famous pubs in London and a firm favourite with locals and visitors wanting to learn more about its history and spot a few celebs.
It used to be run by 'London's rudest landlord' - Norman Balon who retired in 2006 after 63 years working behind the bar and telling patrons where to shove it.
Balon began helping his parents run the former Georgian coaching inn in 1943. Since then the venerable old pub has hosted the famous Private Eye lunches for the last 40 years every other Wednesday and has featured in Keith Waterhouse's Play 'Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell', where the infamous alcoholic journalist finds himself locked in his favourite drinking hole for the night.
The Coach may no longer see the likes of Peter O'Toole and Francis Bacon propping up the bar but it does still get some familiar faces. Not that this means it has smartened up, it still retains its old wood panelling, swirling carpets and ales that run out on a regular basis. It has however had a make over since Balon moved out and the second floor now holds a restaurant which serves traditional pub grub like pies and mash.
There are also now live acoustic nights there on Wednesdays and a comedy night run by The Disestablishment club held in The Private Eye dining room on the second and fourth Thursday of the month.
