The church of St Magnus-the-Martyr was fully destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, standing a mere 300 yards from the Pudding Lane bakery where the blaze began.
Heavily damaged again in the 18th Century, the building was at least left largely unscathed by the Blitz, leaving the interior as a glorious contrast to many London churches.
These days the Anglican temple holds fairly regular recitals and concerts, with the neo-baroque courtyard the perfect setting on a summer’s day.
